Allegheny Upends Lions, 5-3

ERIE, Pa. – The Allegheny Gators extended their win streak to 11 games with a 5-3 victory over the Penn State Behrend baseball team on Tuesday afternoon in non-conference action.

The Allegheny pitching staff allowed just one earned run to even their record at 15-15.

Trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the sixth, the Lions (21-8-1) put together a few hits and were right back in the game.  Following a Vinny Rice (Harmony, PA/Seneca Valley) single, Behrend had runners on second and third with just one out.  Nathan Junk (Cabot, PA/Knoch) came to the plate and clutched up with a two-run single to cut the deficit to just one run.

After the Gators put up two insurance runs in the eighth and ninth, Behrend was in a 5-2 hole entering the ninth.  Joe Paterniti (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown) battled through his at bat to earn a walk.  Ryan Kragnes (Bethel Park, PA/Bethel Park) followed with a single and suddenly the Lions had something going.  Now with two outs, Matt Bittner (Lancaster, NY/St. Mary's) stepped to the plate and smashed a ball to the third basemen to keep the inning alive.  Hustling on the play, Kragnes made it all the way to third.  However, Behrend was unable to do any more damage, falling, 5-3.

Kragnes and Evan Bukowski (Washington, PA/Trinity) led Behrend with two hits each.  Justin Wood (Alleghany, NY/Alleghany) pitched effectively in his fifth start of the year.  Wood allowed just four hits and only two earned runs in seven innings.

The Lions will be back in action tomorrow at Mt. Union.  First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
