Schmidt, Lindberg Throw Three-Hit Shutouts to Upend Hilbert

ERIE, Pa. – Pitchers Ashleigh Schmidt (Sarver, PA/Freeport) and Kayla Lindberg (Austinburg, OH/Geneva) each threw three-hit shutouts to lead the Penn State Behrend softball team past Hilbert in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) action on Wednesday. Behrend took each game in five innings (9-0, 10-0).  

Game One: Penn State Behrend 9, Hilbert 0 
Records: Penn State Behrend (9-9, 3-0 AMCC), Hilbert (0-11-1, 0-1 AMCC) 

Noteworthy: 

* The Lions had eight different players register at least one hit
* Behrend grabbed a 6-0 lead after the second inning
* Freshman Sierra Williams (Grove City, PA/Lakeview) tallied her first collegiate home run over left-field fence to score three
* After clearing the bases, Kayla Salvini (McDonald, PA/Fort Cherry) and Ashleigh Schmidt (Sarver, PA/Freeport) each had a single before scoring on a Maria Jones (Wilcox, PA/Johnsonburg) stand-up triple for a 5-0 lead
* Jones scored the final run of the inning on a misplay at third, getting her home for a six-run advantage
Cami McNany (Emlenton, PA/Allegheny-Clarion Valley) and Jocelyn McNany (Cranberry Township, PA/Seneca Valley) each smacked a double in the fourth to add three more runs for the final margin
* Schmidt struck out six and allowed just three hits for second shutout of the season

Game Two: Penn State Behrend 10, Hilbert 0
Records: Penn State Behrend (10-9, 4-0 AMCC), Hilbert (0-12-1, 0-2 AMCC)

Noteworthy: 

* Behrend scored its first two runs on a pair of bases-loaded walks in the bottom of the first inning
Maddie Smith (DuBois, PA/DuBois) led off the next frame with a first-pitch double before stealing third
Kylee Bundy (DuBois, PA/DuBois) singled up the middle to make it 3-0 and send home Smith
* The Lions had bases loaded twice, scoring a run on a sacrifice fly by Emi Curcio (Perryopolis, PA/Frazier)
* With two outs, Behrend had three straight RBI singles to take an 8-0 lead after two
* Lindberg and company got three up and three down in the third, before J. McNany recorded her second home run
* It is the second-straight doubleheader J. McNany went yard
* Behrend got a total of six runs in the second and added two more in the third
* Lindberg got her third win of the season and first shutout, fanning six along the way

Next Up: 
 
* The Lions return to action on Saturday at Medaille for the AMCC Game of the Week. Behrend will try to get head coach Ashley Gruber her 200th career victory. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
