Behrend Falls in AMCC Championships to Frostburg State

2008 AMCC Championship Results - Saturday, November 8

The 2008 AMCC Volleyball Championship Tournament match was played on Saturday, November 8 in Penn State Behrend's Junker Center. It was a match-up of old friends as the Behrend Lions and Frostburg State met in the finals for the sixth time (1997-2000-2001-2002-2004).

Frostburg State earned a 3-0 win (25-15, 25-17, 25-20) to capture the 2008 AMCC Championship and earn an automatic berth to the NCAA Championships.

The first game was knotted at four apiece before the Bobcats made a mini run. Behrend trailed 8-6 as Coach Pisano called time out, and the blue and white responded with the team's seventh point. Frostburg rallied again stretching another four point advantage to 13-9, before another Behrend time out.

Frostburg's junior, Brooke Winterling, a league-leading three time AMCC Player of the Week, carried the Bobcats to a decisive 25-15 win in the first game.  She would end up with 17 kills and 12 digs in a huge performance for Frostburg State.

In game two, the Bobcats (29-5) continued to rally opening up a 14-7 lead en route to a 25-17 win.   Game three featured a 25-20 Bobcat win, propelling the red and black to earn the league's automatic qualify to the NCAA Tournament.  Frostburg got eight kills each from Sarah Stephens, Chelsea Wassell, and Jamie Thomas.  Rachel Burke collected 17 digs, while Kylie Carrington kept the offense clicking by dishing out 41 assists.

Behrend (22-9) had captured three of the past four AMCC regular season championships, winning the conference tournament title in both 2001 and 2005. Behrend advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time ever in 2005, however Frostburg has now won nine league titles in 12 seasons of AMCC championship play.

Behrend got seven kills from Lauren Dalton (Cochranton/Cochranton), while classmate Danielle Kindle (Erie/McDowell) chipped in three kills and three blocks.  In her final home match senior Brittany Hennessy (Hopewell/Hopewell) collected nine digs.

Behrend awaits word on an ECAC Southern Region Tournament bid. Announcements will also be released early next week. In 2006, the Penn State Behrend volleyball team completed a record-breaking 2006 season with a second place finish in the ECAC Division III South Volleyball Championships.  Behrend defeated Lebanon Valley and Westminster before falling to host New Jersey City University in the Championship Match.
