ERIE, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend volleyball team defeated D’Youville for the second time this season, posting a 3-0 decision in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) action on Wednesday night.
Playing in their second straight home match, the Lions (11-10, 2-2 AMCC) had no problems shutting out their opponent again with scores of 25-7, 25-8 and 25-15.
Behrend opened the first game with a 5-0 spurt and close it with a 15-2 run. The Lions knocked down 10 kills in the run thanks to two apiece from Mary Sperry, Kelly Treser, Alyssa Pears and Tory Storino. The Spartans (8-15, 0-4 AMCC) recorded two of their seven points off kills by Emily McDonald.
Game two resembled the first with the Lions only giving up eight points. Behrend did not need to go through the serving rotation to take a 2-0 lead in the match. Stephanie Kelley helped the Lions take an early 7-3 lead with back-to-back aces. The next 18 out of 22 points belonged Behrend for a 25-8 victory.
D’Youville kept the third game tighter than the two previous. The Lions turned a two-point game into a six-point lead behind an ace from Lexy Weissinger and sneaky kill from Carly Higham and another by Pears. Storino was instrumental in the final seven points with four kills and Chelsea Magnusen put the match away at 25-15.
D. Woods and Weissinger each had 13 digs, while Storino and Pears recorded seven kills apiece. Magnusen finished with 18 assists.
Behrend keeps the home stance going with two matches on Saturday against La Roche and Pitt-Greensburg. Matches begin at 1 p.m.
