Baseball Edges D'Youville in Sweep

ERIE, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend baseball team took down D'Youville 6-2 and 1-0 Wednesday afternoon in a pair of Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) games.

Scott Sada (Saegertown, PA/Saegertown) went 5-for-7 and was hit by a pitch on the day to lead the Lions (16-7, 5-1 AMCC) at the plate. He went 3-for-3 in game one with an RBI, a run scored and stole two bases.

John Hlavinka (Venetia, PA/Peters Township) and David Boehme (Venetia, PA/Seton-Le Salle) each had a hit, run scored and RBI in the contest.

Behrend scored two runs in the second, third and fourth innings of game one to capture the win against the Spartans (2-15, 2-6 AMCC).

Defensive mistakes hurt D'Youville early. After they scored a run in the first, the Lions scored three of their next four runs on an error, balk and passed ball. Sada and Hlavinka each singled to drive in runs and Boehme hit a sacrifice fly to right field that put their final run across the plate.

Sean Rutkosky (Harborcreek, PA/Harbor Creek) threw a complete game, giving up six hits and two walks. Both runs he surrendered were unearned and he struck out two batters.

Game two was a pitchers dual. Neither team was able to score a run until the seventh inning when Behrend tallied the only run of the game. Alex Margraf (Erie, PA/McDowell) doubled off the left field wall to score Brandon Bergstrom (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny) to notch the game's only run.

Zachary Krivda (McKeesport, PA/McKeesport Area) got the start and threw 6.2 innings of two-hit, shutout baseball. He walked two and struck out four. Brandon Smail (Apollo, PA/Kiski Area) came in and tossed 2.1 innings in relief to get the win. He did not surrender a hit, walked two and struck out another four Spartan batters.

Behrend returns to play on Saturday in DuBois, PA against Penn State Altoona. The double header is scheduled for 2 and 5 p.m.
