Penn State Behrend Softball Splits With Mount Aloysius in AMCC Doubleheader

The Penn State Behrend Lions split with the Mt. Aloysius Mounties in their doubleheader games on a cold Saturday afternoon at the Behrend field.  The blue and white were victorious in the first game by a 3-1 margin and were defeated in the second by a 11 to 2 score.

Behrend would threaten in the first inning of game one as they had base runners on second and third but could not capitalize as they walked away with no runs on the board.  The blue and white would make sure to put runs across in the second as Ashley Gruber (Burton, Oh./Berkshire) doubled to deep left field and was followed by a single to the right side by Brittany Simpson (Port Matilda/Bald Eagle).  The Behrend Lions had runners on first and third when Mary DeMino (Wexford/North Allegheny) tripled everyone home with a blast to deep right field to put the blue and white ahead at 2-0.  DeMino would later cross the plate herself as Beth Papalia (Warren/Warren) stole second and drew a throw to score DeMino.

Penn State Behrend held that 3-0 score until the sixth when the Mounties finally got on the board with an RBI double by Jessica Seasoltz to cut the Behrend lead to 3-1.  Mt. Aloysius would threaten in the seventh with a little two lightning as Amy Miller singled up the middle and the next batter drew a walk to put the go-ahead run at the plate.  Starting pitcher Emma Hahn (Smethport/Smethport) would settle down and record the final out of the game with a groundball to second base.  Hahn would finish with a complete game three hitter and record five strikeouts.

The second game was all Mt. Aloysius as they seemed to put up run after run and held the Behrend Lions in check throughout the game.  The Mounties got on the board early as they collected three hits in the first inning leading to a run scored.  The second inning saw the Behrend Lions make a couple of mistakes and the Mt. Aloysius capitalizing on them.  The Mounties' Whitney Giedroc would single home a run to put them up by four runs at 4-0.  The blue and white would threaten in the bottom of the second but the Mounties would not falter.  Mt. Aloysius would put the game out of reach in the third as they put six more runs and had a commanding lead at 10-0.  The blue and white would get on the board in the fourth as a double by Maddie Wieser (Erie/Collegiate Academy) and a single by freshman Laura Spiridon (Warren/Warren) would score a run.  The blue and white would only manage one more run as they fell 11-2 in five innings.

With the split, the Behrend Lions see their record go to 12-10 overall and 5-5 in the conference.  Mt. Aloysius goes to 17-9 overall and 11-3 in the AMCC.  Next up for the Behrend Lions will be a non-conference showdown at Washington and Jefferson on Sunday, April 18.
