Behrend Lions Softball Takes Two From Franciscan in Doubleheader

The Penn State Behrend softall team were victorious in both games against the Franciscan Lady Barons in an AMCC doubleheader at the Behrend softball field on Saturday, April 24.  The blue and white won the first game 3-2 while defeating the Lady Barons in game two by an 11-2 score.

Franciscan played as the home team and Behrend as the visitors in a game originally scheduled to be played at Franciscan.  The Lady Barons grabbed an early lead by knocking out four hits in the bottom of the second inning and pushing two runs across to go ahead 2-0 after two innings of play.

In the top of the fifth Behrend loaded the bases on two Franciscan errors and a hit batter before Mary DeMino (Wexford/North Allegheny) singled in two runs.  Beth Papalia (Warren/Warren) followed that with an RBI single to give the blue and white a 3-2 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth inning.

That would end up as the final score as Behrend starting pitcher Emma Hahn (Smethport/Smethport) had it rolling after the second inning, keeping Franciscan off the scoreboard and striking out four on her way to a complete game win.

In game two, the Behrend Lions got on the board early as Morgan Griffin (Springboro/Conneaut Valley) singled in the second and found her way all around the bases to score the first run of the ball game.  Behrend would get two more runs in the third Papalia doubled to put runners on second and third and DeMino would knock them in with a single to left field to put the Behrend Lions up 3-0.  The Lady Barons would get back two of those runs in the bottom of the inning, but the blue and white would match that with two of their own in the fourth.  The blue and white put the game out of reach in the fifth as they pounded out five runs on three walks to go along with three base hits.  The game was ended in the fifth after the eight run rule was in effect and the Behrend Lions won the game, 11-2.

Behrend will next host a conference doubleheader on Tuesday, April 27 against D'Youville.  Tuesday's games will be broadcast on the Image Sports Network.  With the win, the blue and white improve to 7-7 in the conference and 16-16 overall.
