Softball Splits Twinbill

FORT MYERS, Fl. – Julie Heinl (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny) pitched a four-hit shutout and fanned six batters to lead the Penn State Behrend softball team past Eastern Nazarene 3-0 in the nightcap of a twinbill at the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, Florida on Thursday.

The Lions (4-6) fell 1-0 to WPI in the opener.

Against Eastern Nazarene, Behrend smacked 12 hits and completed the day error free. Leah Griffin (Springboro, PA/Conneaut Valley) went 3-for-4 with an RBI, while Kelly Hedderick (Waterford, PA/Mercyhurst Prep), Kelsey Fuller (Albion, PA/ Northwestern) and Heinl all had two hits apiece.

With two outs in the first inning, Griffin singled and Fuller doubled before Hedderick got the RBI single for a 1-0 lead. The same line up loaded the bases in the third and Chelsi Riordan (Conneaut , PA/Linesville) hit an RBI ground out to make it 2-0.

Griffin got her RBI in the fourth to knock in the final run for the Lions.

In the first game, WPI got its lone run in the top of the second to make it the game winner. Behrend had one more hit than WPI with no errors.

Hedderick pitched seven innings and struck out for, giving up three hits for the loss.

The Lions return to action tomorrow against Dominican and Wittenberg. The first game begins at 9 a.m.
