Angela Albertson Field '02

Angela Albertson Field didn’t expect to become one of the most accomplished Penn State Behrend women’s tennis players and she certainly would not have expected to be just the second women’s tennis player to gain entrance into the Hall of Fame. But the four-year standout amassed both in an outstanding career on the court.

Albertson was instrumental in the early success of the Lions’ tennis team, leading Behrend to three AMCC Championships while winning an individual conference title at No. 1 singles her senior year. At the time of graduation, she ranked second all-time in women’s single match victories and third on the doubles chart.

Albertson began her collegiate career as the Lions’ No. 4 singles player in 1998, earning First-Team All-AMCC honors with an 11-7 overall record. In doubles play, she tallied a 5-5 record for a spot on the All-Conference second team. Albertson helped Behrend win its second-ever AMCC Championship and the first of three straight for the freshman.

As a sophomore in 1999, she was 12-6 at No. 3 singles, posted an 8-3 doubles record and was named AMCC Athlete of the Week for going undefeated with a 3-0 mark during a crucial week for the Lions. Behrend captured yet another conference crown, making it two in a row for Albertson, who earned All-AMCC first-team accolades.

During her junior campaign, she had her best season yet, winning 17 of 22 matches at No. 3 singles as the Lions captured another AMCC title. For a third year in a row, Albertson was named All-Conference in singles. This time second team at the No. 3 spot and first team at No. 2 doubles. Her 17 wins is tied for seventh most victories in the Behrend record books.

Her senior year in 2002, she made her way to the top of the lineup and competed at No. 1 singles. In the AMCC Tournament, Albertson posted one of the best comebacks in women’s tennis history. After losing game one 6-4 and trailing in game two, she stormed back to win 7-5, 6-3 for her first conference title at No. 1 singles and earned the AMCC Most Valuable Player Award. Albertson followed that with the John Zahniser Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award presented by the Athletic Department.

She currently ranks third in singles wins in program history with 49 and is seventh with 30 doubles victories.
