Jennifer Detelich Crooks '01

Jennifer Detelich excelled in track & field during her time at Behrend from 1997-2001. She graduated as the school’s record holder in the 800m and 1500m, while finishing second in the 3000m. Her sophomore year she ran 4:58.10 to set the school record in the 1500m, but her specialty was in the 800m.

When Detelich arrived on campus in the fall of 1997, the track & field program was just a club team. The squad was about to sky-rocket into excellence and Detelich was a vital piece to the success of the program. Detelich was the type of runner who competed hard all of the time, no matter the competition.

In 1999, the Lions had their first official meet in Behrend history, and soon after the program was being recognized nationally. Detelich finished third in the 800m with a time of 2:28.65 at the Clarion Invitational on March 27, 1999. She ran a personal best 5:06.8 in the 1500m for third place and 2:28.6 in the 800m for third to earn six points on the day for the Lions.

She won the Grove City "Parents Weekend" Invitational in the 3000m, and later that same year, she set the school record in the 800m with a time of 2:25.76, a record that stood for three years.

Her senior year, she set the school record in the women’s sprint medley with a time of 4:39.47 along with teammates Jen Smialek, Louise Wingerter and Michelle Gutting at the Disney Relays March 11-12, 2000. She ran the 800m leg, anchoring the medley with a time of 2:35. Just over a week later, on March 25, Detelich broke the 3000m record with a time of 11:09.37, a record that stood until 2002. She was instrumental in helping the Lions, ranked second in the Mideast Region and 26th nationally in the April 10th poll, in just the second season as a varsity sport.

Detelich concluded her career being honored with the John Zahniser Female Scholar Athlete Award as a junior. Her name remains etched in the record book, sitting 6th in 3000m, 7th in 800m, and 7th in 1500m.

Detelich was also a member of the women’s basketball team for one season.
