Kevin Gorny

Gorny was the top runner for the Penn State Behrend cross country and track and field teams from 2006-09. He was a four-time All-Conference honoree in cross country. Gorny was named AMCC Newcomer of the Year in 2006, before becoming a two-time AMCC Champion and Runner of the Year. He led the Behrend pack to three consecutive AMCC Championships (07, 08, 09). In track and field, Gorny was a three-time Mason Dixon Steeple Chase Conference Champion. He still holds Top 10 marks in the 1-mile run, 3K, and 5K for indoor track. Gorny also qualified for the indoor and outdoor ECAC Championships during his career.

Gorny pushed the men’s cross country/track & field programs to a new level in his four years with the Lions. He is only one of 26 athletes in 25-year history of the AMCC to earn All-Conference all four seasons. In 2006, the freshman was named AMCC Newcomer of the Year while earning a spot on the All-AMCC team thanks to his seventh-place finish at the Conference Championships (29.33). Gorny was also named Team Rookie of the Year. In track & field, he was the Mason-Dixon Conference Champion and ECAC qualifier in the steeplechase with a school-record breaking time of 9:54.19.

The following season, he led the Lions to their second overall AMCC Championship. It also marked the first of three straight championships for Behrend. Gorny set the tone not only for himself but for the team and program. He shaved nearly two minutes off his freshman time at the AMCC meet, clocking in at 27:51 to claim the individual championship and help the Lions capture the conference crown. Gorny was voted AMCC Runner of the Year and Team MVP. On the indoor track, he set the school record in the mile and the DMR record, while posting Top 10 times in the 800m and 5000m. When it came time to transition to outdoor, Gorny was a repeat champion and ECAC qualifier in the steeplechase with a new school-record time of 9:41.36. Gorny earned Team MVP, a hard feat to accomplish as a distance runner with the limited total events.

Despite battling injuries his junior season, he fought for a second-place finish individually at the AMCC Championships with a time of 27:45. The Lions edged Franciscan by 17 points to keep the team title with Behrend. Gorny was selected to the All-Conference Team and earned his second-straight Team MVP award. The injuries continued through the track & field seasons yet he recorded the third-best time in program history at the indoor 3000m and also earned All-Mason Dixon Conference for outdoor.

The fall of 2009, Gorny concluded his senior year on the cross country course with another Conference Champion medal and AMCC Runner of the Year honor. He ran seven seconds faster than teammate Andy Iams to win the individual title and combined they led the Lions to a third straight team championship. Behrend had seven runners in the Top 10, only collecting 17 points for the AMCC crown. Gorny headlined the AMCC honors and was named to the All-Conference team. He was unable to continue his senior year into track & field due to injury and he used his strength to motivate and help coach his teammates at meets and practices.

At time of graduation, Gorny held the top 10 times at Behrend for the 3000m steeplechase.
