Lions Top Northwestern With 5-Run Fifth Inning

FORT PIERCE, Fl. - The Penn State Behrend baseball team defeated Northwestern Thursday afternoon, 7-4.

The Lions (4-5) offense has been heating up over the past couple days and today proved to be no different. Behrend registered 15 hits on the day including five players with multiple hits.

In the fifth inning, Behrend broke a 1-all tie to jump out to a 6-1 lead. Brandon Bergstrom (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny) and John Brittner (Zelienople, PA/Seneca Valley) came around to score on a Scott Sada (Saegertown, PA/Saegertown) triple to make the score 3-1. Two batters later, Brian Bohman (Erie, PA/McDowell) singled to bring in Sada.

Ryan Hamm (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny) reached base on an error by the Eagles (1-8) shortstop. Justin Foreman (Oakdale, PA/South Fayette) came to the plate and smacked a double to bring in Bohman and Hamm.

Northwestern added one run in the bottom half of the fifth, but the Lions countered with one more of their own in the sixth.

Nathan Mayes (North East, PA/North East) took the mound with two on and one out in the bottom of the ninth to pick up the save. He gave up one hit that scored one Eagles run, but then forced a ground ball double play to end the game.

Justin Rohrer (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin) earned his first win of the year. He pitched 7 solid innings for the Behrend, stiking out 12 and giving up two runs.

Scott sada had himself a day at the plate. He went 3-for-4 with a homerun, triple, double and four RBIs.
