Lions Sweep Ursinus On Opening Day

Fort Pierce, FL – The Penn State Behrend baseball team defeated Ursinus 3-2 and 4-2 in a doubleheader to start the season in non-conference action on Sunday afternoon.

The Lions (2-0) played solid defense and got good pitching performances from Ryan Jacobs (Port Vue, PA/South Allegheny) and Mike Moyer (Clearfield, PA/Clearfield).

In game one, Jacobs was dominant on the bump.  The junior pitcher struck out 10 batters in 6.2 innings pitched.  Jacobs only gave up one earned run.  Chad Zurat (Clearfield, PA/Clearfield) came in and shut the door to earn the save.

After falling behind 1-0, Behrend came back with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to take the lead.  Dante DeSantis (DuBois, PA/Dubois Central Catholic) drew a bases loaded walk in the fourth inning to push across the first run.  In the fifth, Matt Bittner (Lancaster, NY/St. Mary's) doubled in Ryan Kragnes (Bethel Park, PA/Bethel Park) to give the Lions their first lead.  Bittner also drove in a crucial insurance run in the seventh.

In game two, Moyer picked up where Jacobs and Zurat left off.  Moyer threw five scoreless innings before giving up one in the sixth.  Justin Wood (Alleghany, NY/Alleghany Limestone) came in for his first collegiate innings and recorded his first strike out before giving way to Jay Condit (Cranberry Township, PA/Seneca Valley) who earned the save.

Ryan Geibel (East Butler, PA/Butler), Josh Barbara (Pittsburgh, PA/Fox Chapel), and Kragnes each drove in runs for Behrend.

The Lions will be back in action tomorrow against Elizabethtown at 12 p.m.
