MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend baseball team fell to Allegheny 9-3 in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon.
After holding a 1-0 lead through three innings, the Lions (15-7) were outscored 9-2 the rest of the way.
With two outs in the second, Alex Margraf (Erie, PA/McDowell) came through for Behrend with an RBI double down the left field line. Jordan Weinzierl (St. Marys, PA/St. Marys) came around to score after reaching on a single, giving the Lions a 1-0 lead.
The momentum turned in the fourth with Allegheny scoring five runs on three hits to take a 5-1 lead. After Behrend answered with a single run in the fifth, the Gators added to the advantage with three more runs in their half of the inning. The Lions put another single run on the board in the seventh off a James Verona (Murrysville, PA/Franklin Regional) RBI single, but it was not enough to catch Allegheny.
Despite suffering the six-run loss, the Behrend staff pitched well. Tylor Williams (Atlantic, PA/Conneaut Lake) and Jay Condit (Cranberry Township, PA/Seneca Valley) combined to give up just three earned runs while striking out nine batters in eight innings of work.
The Lions will be back on the diamond this Saturday to host Mt. Aloysius in an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) doubleheader. Game one is set to begin at 1 p.m.
