Lions Defeat Mount Union in Regular Season Finale

ALLIANCE, Ohio – The Penn State Behrend baseball team ended the regular season on a high note with 10-5 non-conference win over Mount Union on Tuesday afternoon.

The two teams were battling in a scoreless tie until the Purple Raiders got on the board first with a single run in the third to take a 1-0 lead.  The Lions (17-10) answered with two runs in the top of the fourth, but Mount Union came right back to tie the game at 2-2 through four innings.

In the sixth, Behrend took the lead for good.  With the bases loaded and one out, Chris Bissell (Pittsburgh, PA/Woodland Hills) ripped a two-run double down the right field line to put the Lions up, 4-2.  Bissell eventually came around to score on a passed ball for another insurance run.

Behrend added to the advantage in the eighth with five runs on three hits to take command.  Matt Wolczko (Apollo, PA/Kiski) crushed a two-run triple to get the offense going.  Now with two outs in the inning, Vinny Rice (Harmony, PA/Seneca Valley) came through in the clutch with a two-run single to cap the scoring.

The Purple Raiders started to mount a comeback with one in the eighth and two in the ninth, but Jay Condit (Cranberry Township, PA/Seneca Valley) recorded the final two outs to shut the door.  Matt Parnes (Cranberry Township, PA/Seneca Valley) picked up his third win of the season with three scoreless innings of relief.

The Behrend offense was led by Ryan Kragnes (Bethel Park, PA/Bethel Park), Tommy Kocur (Erie, PA/McDowell) and Rice who each recorded two hits.

The regular season is now complete for the Lions as they will turn to the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Championship Tournament.  Behrend will host the entire tournament with game one between La Roche and Mount Aloysius scheduled for 9 a.m. on Thursday.  The Lions will play Pitt-Greensburg at 12 p.m.
