Lions Fall to No. 14 Marietta at Mideast Regional

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Penn State Behrend baseball team fell to No. 14 Marietta 11-1 in their first game of the 2013 Mideast Regional hosted by Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology on Wednesday evening.

The Lions (30-11) managed just one run on six hits against the Pioneers pitching staff.

Marietta jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after the first inning.  The Pioneers tallied four hits in the inning before Behrend starting pitcher Ryan Jacobs (Port Vue, PA/South Allegheny) struck out the final two hitters.

In the third, Marietta plated a couple more runs to add to the advantage.  Despite just two hits in the inning, the Pioneers capitalized on a Lions' error to put two unearned runs on the board.

With a 4-0 lead through six innings, Marietta added a single insurance run in the seventh and six in the eighth to earn the victory.

Jacobs suffered just his second loss of the season after seven solid innings with nine strikeouts.  The Behrend offense was led by Jordan Weinzierl (St. Marys, PA/St. Marys) who recorded two hits.  Matt Bittner (Lancaster, NY/St. Mary's) drove in the Lions' only run with a single in the ninth.

Behrend will move on to play No. 27 Wooster tomorrow at 1:15 p.m. in an elimination game.
