Wrestling Competes at W&J Invite; Three Wrestlers Place

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend wrestling team had three wrestlers place to help the Lions finish 11th out of 13 teams at the Washington & Jefferson Invitational on Saturday.

Freshman Jacob Lenhardt (McKean, PA/General McLane) tied for fifth at heavyweight with a 5-1 record on the day. He reached his maximum number of matches for the day and tied Christian Climer of Heidelberg for fifth overall.

At 184, freshmen Jake Paulson (Erie, PA/McDowell) and senior Jacob Parsons (Titusville, PA/Maplewood) were fifth and sixth, respectively. The both tallied a 3-2 record and combined for five pins.

Lenhardt started the day with a 4-0 win over John Downey of Lycoming. He then dropped his lone match by a score of 7-3 to Zach Yackenchick of Millersville, before winning his final four matches. Lenhardt earned a 7-2 decision over Noah Klingborg of Lycoming and then advanced with a 2-0 decision over Farhan Kahn of Middlesex (NJ). He narrowly defeated Tom Lynd of Lycoming 3-2 and finished the day with a 3-1 win over Antonio Zapata.

Also competing at heavyweight, Nate Conti (Erie, PA/Fort LeBoeuf) picked up a win in the consolation bracket with a 3-1 final over David Ainscough of Thiel.

Paulson's three wins on the day were a 10-4 score over Mike Millero of Waynesburg to open the day. He tallied back-to-back pins in 4:30 and 3:38 and advanced to the fifth-place match against Parsons, who pinned three opponents in order to get to the place match. He was able to post pin times of 4:28, 4:27 and 4:10. Parsons forfeited the match to Paulson's in good sportsmanship to set the placements of sixth and fifth, respectively.

Brandon Miller (Hermitage, PA/Hickory) led the Lions at the 149 weight class. He registered three wins on the day, starting with a 14-3 win over Shawn Jones of Millersville. Miller dropped to the consolation bracket but won the next two matches with an 11-4 decision and pinning K. Soules of Lycoming.

At 157, Sam Svetz (North East, PA/North East) tallied a win by pinning Kyle Drick of Lycoming. Max McCann (Export, PA/Franklin Regional) managed to pin one of his three opponents at 165. He defeated Jacob Fabian of W&J in 2:49.

Zachary Ishman (Youngsville, PA/Youngsville) also recorded a win on the day. He pinned Marco Herrera of Waynesburg in 1:48.

Behrend returns to action on Wednesday in its home opener against Thiel. The match will take place in Erie Hall at 8 p.m.
