Wrestling Earns First Dual-Meet Victory

CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, Ohio – The Penn State Behrend wrestling team won their first dual meet of the season with a 27-20 decision over Lourdes at the John Carroll Duals held on Sunday.

After falling in the first three bouts, the Lions (1-4) picked up wins in five of the next six bouts for their first dual-meet victory. Behrend fell 45-9 to Otterbein in the first match of the day, before falling 32-15 to John Carroll. The Lions tallied the win over Lourdes in their third match and then dropped a 44-7 decision to Lycoming.

Freshman Jake Paulson (Erie, PA/McDowell) went undefeated on the day with a 4-0 record. He registered two pins, a technical fall and a win by decision. Senior Jacob Parsons (Titusville, PA/Maplewood) posted a 3-1 record, only falling in the match to Otterbein. Jacob Lenhardt (McKean, PA/General McLane) and Sam Svetz (North East, PA/North East) split, going 2-2 on the day.

Jake Ognibene (Washington, PA/Chartiers-Houston) earned the first points for Behrend against the Gray Wolves at 149. He pinned Troy Wilson in 3:52 for his only win of the day. At 165, Svetz posted a major decision (11-3) win over Stefan Johnson, before Donnie Kerr (Ellwood City, PA/Lincoln) moved up two weight classes to earn an 11-4 decision againsdt Tyler Gates at 174.

At 184, Parsons pinned Noah Nuno in the first period (1:47) followed by a technical fall from Paulson at 197 over Tylor Grames (19-2) for a 24-20 lead in the match. It came down to Lenhardt at heavy weight. He posted a 4-2 decision against Ben Ferguson to end with a 27-20 victory.

Paulson started off the day hot with back-to-back pins in the Otterbein and John Carroll matches at the 184 weight class. He pinned Donny Didion in 6:45 against Otterbein and then needed 4:26 versus Christian Hipsher of John Carroll to begin with a pair of wins. Paulson went to 197 against Lourdes and then wrestled again at 184 for a 9-4 decision over Bradley Miccio of Lycoming.

In addition to Lourdes, Parsons recorded an 8-5 decision over Jimmy Suhayda of John Carroll and then followed with a 15-5 major decision against Brody Keefe.

Svetz began at 157 against Otterbein, working a 7-4 decision versus Christian Koch for his first of two wins on the day. Lenhardt also got his first win of the day and first pin of the season against Bryce Carmichael of John Carroll in 2:10.

Behrend returns to action on Saturday, December 2 at Washington & Jefferson with Thomas More, beginning at 3 p.m.
