Behrend Baseball Nips Dominican; Falls to Centre in Season Opener

DANVILLE, KY – The Penn State Behrend baseball team opened their season by splitting a pair with Centre and Dominican in non-conference action on Saturday.

Final Scores:

Game 1: Centre 12, Penn State Behrend 5,
Game 2: Penn State Behrend 6, Dominican 5

Game One:

* Centre scored 12 runs off 15 hits to spoil the Lions season opener
* The Colonels scattered seven runs across the fourth and fifth inning to take a 10-4 lead heading into the final four innings
* Chase Palmer (Brookeville, PA/Brookeville) went 3-for-4 with two RBIs
* Daniel Boehme (Peters Township, PA/Seton LaSalle) tallied a pair of hits, smacking a double and scoring two runs
* Juston Jones (Moon Township, PA/Moon) also tallied two runs and added hit
* Jeff Zick (Moon, PA/Our Lady of Sacred Heart) made the start and pitched 3.1 innings, allowing five earned runs before making way to Colin Kelly (Erie, PA/Cathedral Prep) and then Evan Bromley (Bethel Park, PA/Bethel Park)
* The Lions had three hits and three runs in the fifth, scoring all three runs faced with two outs
* Jones was hit by a pitch and Boehme singles to get runners on the corners
* Palmer singles to score Jones and pushing Boehme to second
* Ryan Meneskie (Moon Township, PA/Moon) doubled to right field to send in Boehme and Palmer scored on a pass ball to cut the lead to 7-5 at the top of the fifth   

Game Two:

* In the bottom of the ninth with two outs, Isaac Stouffer (Punxsutawney, PA/Punxsutawney) hit a walk-off double to score Silvio Ionadi (Pittsburgh, PA/Plum) and help the Lions pick up a 6-5 win
* The hit marks Stouffer's 100 for his career 
* Tied at 5-all, Zac Bogats (Corapolis, PA/Moon) reached on an error and Ionadi came in to pinch run
* Jones was hit by a pitch, sending Ionadi to second before Stouffer knocked him in
* Down 3-0 after the fourth, Behrend had a five-run fifth inning to take the lead until the ninth
* Dominican scored two runs off one hit at the top of the ninth to tie it up
* Stouffer finished with three RBIs, two hits and a run, while Mac Ciocco (Venetia, PA/Peters Township) tallied a pair of doubles
* Starter Derrick Shields (Waterford, PA/Fort LeBoeuf) was chased out in the sixth inning, allowing three runs on four hits and striking out a career-high 13
* Jones came in relief in the eighth inning to get the win
