Behrend Baseball Defeats Mt. Aloysius in Game One; Lions Fall in Game Two

CRESSON, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend team split an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) doubleheader against Mt. Aloysius. The Lions won 4-2, before falling 9-6 in the nightcap on Saturday. 

Final Score: Penn State Behrend 4, Mt. Aloysius 2

Noteworthy:

* Starter Jeff Zick (Moon, PA/Our Lady of Sacred Heart) reached 100 career strikeouts in game one, fanning three batters

Game One:

* Chase Palmer (Brookville, PA/Brookville) and Ryan Meneskie (Moon Township, PA/Moon) accounted for four of the Lions nine hits in the game
* Behrend took an early 1-0 lead and pushed it to three runs by the top of the fifth
* A pair of singles led the Lions first run in the opening frame
* Zac Bogats (Corapolis, PA/Moon) led off with a single to center field and scored on a bases-loaded walk
* The Mounties responded with a run in the bottom of the first to tie it up
* Both Meneski and Colin Harger (Pittsburgh, PA/Shaler) each doubled in the fourth to help the Lions tack on two more runs for a 3-1 lead
* Behrend made it 4-1 in the fifth and held on for the win
* Joe Lang (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny) registered his second win of the season in relief, pitching three solid innings and allowing two hits

Game Two:

Final Score: Mt. Aloysius 9, Penn State Behrend 6
Records: Penn State Behrend (12-13, 3-3 AMCC), Mt. Aloysius (11-14, 3-3 AMCC)

* Mt. Aloysius scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to erase a two-run deficit
* The Mounties used four hits in the eighth including a double by Tyler Quade to take a 9-6 lead
* Behrend tallied four runs in the top of the third for a 4-1 lead
* Palmer recorded two hits, while Mac Ciocco (Venetia, PA/Peters Township) drove in two runs
* Silvio Ionadi (Pittsburgh, PA/Plum) smacked his second home run of the season for the Lions lone run in the eighth to make it 6-4
* Derrick Shields (Waterford, PA/Fort LeBoeuf) pitched seven innings, facing 31 batters and striking out eight before giving way to Will Jamison (Shaler, PA/Shaler)
* Jamison gave up five earned runs off four hits for the loss
