GREENSBURG, Pa. – Marcus Thomas scored 16 points to lead Pitt-Greensburg past the Penn State Behrend men's basketball team 65-61 on Saturday afternoon.
Nick DeLisio (Aliquippa, PA/Central Valley) poured in 18 with six rebounds and Keith Wallace (Erie, PA/Central Tech) added 14 points and notched three assists in the Lions' (14-3, 7-2 AMCC) first defeat since a December 14 setback to Medaille.
The four point margin may or may not be deceiving.
Trailing by nine with 3:43 remaining, Behrend made sure to not leave Southern Pennsylvania without a fight.
Following two Rocco Contristano free throws, DeLisio hit a three. Wallace followed with a pair of free throws.
Shane Skelly (Westlake, OH/Westlake) then came home on a layup to slash the deficit to two with 1:15 remaining. A frantic final minute ensued, with the Lions ending up on the short end thanks to a solid defensive effort by the Bobcats.
Contristano followed through on two foul shots in the closing seconds to push the final score to 65-61.
Mike Connelly chipped in 12 points off the bench for Greensburg, who won their second consecutive game to improve to 8-9 overall and 6-4 in conference play.
Wes Davic (Grafton, OH/Midview) paced Behrend on the glass with nine rebounds, and Casey Courneen (Sewickley, PA/Quaker Valley) led the Lions with four assists.
Zane Hackett (Brookville, PA/Brookville) grabbed four boards for Behrend who had their nine game winning streak snapped. It was their longest such run since the 2007-08 campaign when they won 11 in a row.
The Lions will next travel to D'Youville on Wednesday, January 29 at 6 pm.
