Lions Win Their Home Opener

ERIE, Pa. - The Penn State Behrend men's basketball team took down the Fredonia State Blue Devils 66-50 in their home opener at the Junker Center on Tuesday night.

The Lions (2-0) never trailed in the contest, holding a 10-point lead for the majority of the first half thanks in part to nine points from freshman Justin Gorny (South Park, PA/South Park) and eight from senior Zane Hackett (Brookville, PA/Brookville).

Hackett registered a career-high 14 rebounds and added 17 points to record his second double-double of the season.

After cutting the Behrend lead to just four before the half, a quick 6-2 run by the Blue Devils (0-4) tied the game at 35 to open up the second half.  The Lions would not fall behind. A three from freshman guard Andy Niland (Fairview, PA/Fairview) and another by freshman guard Matt Colpoys (Erie, PA/Cathedral Prep) gave Behrend the final lead they would not relinquish with 15:15 remaining.

The Lions continued to build on their lead during the second half and did not look back. They registered their biggest lead with just under two minutes to play when Hackett put Behrend up by 19 with a thunderous dunk off a nice cross-court pass from Niland to seal the game.

The Lions are back in action Saturday at home against Allegheny. Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
