Golfers Take Third at James Bowen Invitational

NORTH EAST, Pa. – Nicholas VanDamia (Erie, PA/Fort LeBoeuf) fired a low score of 76 to tie for second place and lead the Penn State Behrend men's golf team at the James Bowen Invitational held at Lake View Country Club in North East, Pennsylvania.

The Lions placed third with a team total of 318 for the par 72 course. Grove City tied with Daemen for first place and won the tiebreaker to win the invitational with a 317.

VanDamia shot a four over par to finish first on the squad and second overall. Sean Sculley (Waterford, PA/Mercyhurst) carded the next best team score with a 78. He tied for fourth out of 54 golfers.

Behrend's third best golfers on the day were Dalton Zelasco (Meadville, PA/Meadville) and Cody Stinson (Erie, PA/Harbor Creek). They both tied with an 82, tying for 17th overall and counting for the Lion's final two scores for the "white" team. Alex Shindledecker (Erie, PA/McDowell) shot an 84 for the afternoon to round out the top five and take 26th place.

Behrend had a second team competing at the tournament. The "blue" team took sixth with a 335. Ryan Matlock (Erie, PA/Mercyhurst) led with an 80 to tie for ninth among all the competitors. Ryder Gringol (Erie, PA/McDowell) tied for 11th with an 81 for second on the team, while Zac McCue (Prospect, PA/Slippery Rock) finished with an 82 to tie for 17th.

Travis Becker (Harmony, PA/Seneca Valley) and Brad Cypher (Evans City, PA/Seneca Valley) were the final two golfers for Behrend. Becker shot a 92 (T41) and Cypher was one stroke behind with a 93 (T43).

Individually, Drew Sorenson (Corry, PA/Corry) posted a 99 for 18 holes.

The Lions return to action tomorrow at the La Roche Invitational.
