ERIE, Pa. – Vinny Bell scored his team-leading ninth goal of the season with 3:09 left in the second overtime to lift Case Western Reserve past Penn State Behrend 1-0 in non-conference men's soccer action on Tuesday.
With time expiring, Kyle Alsup served the ball in from the left side and Bell managed to head the ball over a charging Jarrod Wassell (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg) for the game winner and handing the Lions (2-4-1) their third overtime loss this season.
The match-up between the two teams seemed very even, proving two scoreless halves with Case Western taking control in the first and Behrend coming back with a battle in the second.
The Lions had an opportunity in the second half to take a 1-0 lead, but Jake Gamble's (Butler, PA/Butler) goal off an Aaron Meehl (North East, PA/North East) pass was called back due to offsides.
There were a total of four shots taken in the overtime, with the Spartans able to come out on the positive side in the 107th minute.
Chris Bolea (Ambridge, PA/Ambridge) started in goal for Behrend, making two saves before Wassell played the remainder of the game and had one stop on nine shots faced.
The Lions open conference play on Saturday when they play host to La Roche at Family First Sports Park. Game time is 1 p.m.
