Lions Bounce Back for Second AMCC Win
The Penn State Behrend men's soccer team rebounded from their first AMCC loss earlier this week to defeat Pitt-Greensburg 4-2 on Saturday evening.
Greensburg, Pa. - The Penn State Behrend men's soccer team rebounded from their first Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) loss earlier this week to defeat Pitt-Greensburg 4-2 on Saturday evening.
The Lions (4-5-1, 2-1 AMCC) got on the board first at the 20:09 mark. Kyle McKinney (Chesterland, OH/West Geauga) found Jake Gamble (Butler, PA/Butler) off of a corner kick to put Behrend up 1-0. Twenty minutes later, Eric Vunovic (North Huntingdon, PA/Norwin) fired a long shot from 25 yards out that found the back of the net to give the Lions a commanding 2-0 halftime lead. Quick passing by Aaron Meehl (North East, PA/North East) and Michael Liebdzinski (North Huntingdon, PA/Norwin) gave Vunovic the open window to beat the goalkeeper. On the assist, Meehl recorded his 50th career point to put him in the top 10 in Behrend history.
With a strong first half in the books, the Lions came out fast to start the second. Just over five minutes into the half, Vunovic dished to Meehl off of a free kick who beat the goalie to push the lead to 3-0. Meehl reached another milestone with the goal, recording his 20th of his career. The Bobcats wouldn't go away quietly though. Max Paolone and Jeremy Niemiec each added a goal apiece to cut the lead to 3-2.
Behrend had a quick answer after the second goal. Barely five minutes later, Vunovic and Garrett Fiscus (Russell, PA/Eisenhower) used great team work to find Meehl for his second goal of the game. The Lions held off the final attempts by Pitt-Greensburg to secure the 4-2 conference win.
Behrend will be back on the pitch Monday as they travel to Allegheny for a non-conference contest. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
