FREDONIA, N.Y. – The Penn State Behrend men's soccer defeated Fredonia St. 2-1 Friday evening on the first day of the Blue Devil Clarion Classic.
After trailing 1-0 at the break and for over 35 minutes in the second half, the Lions (2-1) struck twice in an eight minute span to upend the Blue Devils.
The two teams played even for the opening 37 minutes until Patrick Schuber netted the game's first goal to give Fredonia St. a 1-0 advantage.
The Blue Devils defense stepped up and held Behrend scoreless for the next 44 minutes. With less than 10 minutes to play, Eric Vunovic (North Huntingdon, PA/Norwin) led a great ball into the box where Jake Gamble (Butler, PA/Butler) was able to net his second goal of the season and tie the game at 1-all.
Just as the game looked like it was headed to overtime, Vunovic came through once again. Jimmy Belack (Upper St. Clair, PA/Upper St. Clair) found an open Vunovic in stride with time winding down. With just one man to beat, Vunovic fired a shot past the keeper for the game winner at the 89:21 mark.
The Lions offense had plenty of opportunities, dominating Fredonia St. with 25 shots and 10 shots on goal.
Behrend will be back in action tomorrow against Buffalo St. at 3 p.m. for day two of the Blue Devil Clarion Classic.
