Last Second Goal Lifts Altoona Over Behrend

ERIE,Pa. – The Penn State Behrend men's soccer team fell to Penn State Altoona 2-1 in double-overtime on Saturday afternoon in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) action.

With just seconds remaining in the second overtime, Cody Beach's sliding goal gave the Lions (14-3, 7-1 AMCC) their first conference loss.

Altoona came out fast to start the game with five shots in the first 20 minutes.  The Lions were finally able to get one past the keeper in the 23rd minute for a 1-0 advantage.  Each team relied on their defense, with Altoona clinging to a 1-0 halftime lead.

In the second half, the Altoona defense continued to stifle the Lions.  Despite having 11 second half shots, Behrend was not able to get on the board until the 83rd minute.  Kyle Coonelly (Sewickley, PA/Quaker Valley) played a long ball into the box where Jake Gamble (Butler, PA/Bulter) headed it perfectly past the goalie.  The score remained tied at 1-all, sending the game into overtime.

After playing to a scoreless first overtime, one more 10-minute session was played.  Both teams had their opportunities in the overtimes with four shots each.  With less than 15 seconds to play, Altoona capitalized on a great lead pass.  Beach received a nice ball just outside of the box and took a sliding shot that beat the keeper to clinch the win for Altoona.

Behrend will finish the regular-season on Tuesday at Hilbert.  Game time is set for 3 p.m.
