ERIE Pa. – Rose-Hulman advanced to the second round of the 2013 NCAA Tournament on Thursday, defeating the Penn State Behrend men's soccer team on penalty kicks, 9-8 at Behrend Field.
The two teams battled to a 0-0 tie following regulation and two ten minute sudden death overtime periods.
The assertive play of Garrett Fiscus (Russell, PA/Eisenhower) and Jimmy Belack (Upper St. Clair, PA/Upper St. Clair) kept the Engineers on their heels all night long. Each had four shots for the Lions.
But Rose-Hulman goalkeeper Drew Miller was up to the task, making one acrobatic save after another to keep the game scoreless.
Just as remarkable was Behrend goalkeeper Jarrod Wassell (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg) who held the Engineers without a goal through 110:00 minutes of regulation and overtime play. Wassell kept the Lions alive with his only save of the contest midway through the second overtime period.
Despite Behrend outshooting Rose-Hulman 17-10, the Engineers were able to force a penalty kick session.
Kyle Coonelly (Sewickley, PA/Quaker Valley), Peter Brower (Rochester, NY/McQuaid Jesuit), Fiscus, and Jake Szul (North East, PA/North East) nailed each of the Lions first four penalty kicks. It was 4-4 after each team's best of five, which necessitated further action.
On the seventh PK rung, Wassell faced a must-save situation and did just that. He dove to his right and deflected the ball away to force more play.
Anton Benedikt (Madison, NJ/Madison), Nick Stewart (Pittsburgh, PA/Keystone Oaks), and Charlie Sestito (Beaver, PA/Beaver) then poured in shots for Behrend, but Rose-Hulman matched them PK for PK.
After nine heart stopping sessions, Marshall Ishmael found the back of the net to send the Engineers to the second round.
The Lions ended their season with a record of 16-4-2.
