ERIE, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend men's soccer team extended their win streak to nine games Tuesday morning after beating Medaille 2-1 in the Allegheny Mountain College Conference (AMCC) Game of the Week.
Each of the Lions' (12-1-1, 6-0 AMCC) and Mavericks' (9-4-1, 3-1-1 AMCC) first meeting over the past few years had regular-season title implications. The winner of the regular-season game has claimed the title in each year over the past decade, and this year looks to be following the same trend.
A hard-fought battle between both sides resulted in Medaille outshooting Behrend 10-6, while corners and saves were even at four for each team.
The Lions got off to a quick start when junior midfielder Kyle Beckett (Suffolk, VA/Kings Fork) scored his first goal of the season at the 7:11 mark. Sean Gallagher (Bethel Park, PA/Bethel Park) recorded his team-leading fifth assist on Beckett's tally.
The Mavericks answered right away in the 13th minute when Jackson Hamilton recorded his fourth goal of the season to tie the game at one.
Neither team could score for the next fifty minutes to take the lead. Behrend was finally able to break the 1-all tie when Nick Stewart (Pittsburgh, PA/Keystone Oaks) found the back of the net in the 78th minute.
Stewart has now scored in seven of the Lions' last eight games. Will Cole (Russell, PA/Eisenhower) picked up his fifth win of the season, making three saves.
Behrend is back in action Saturday when they travel to Pitt-Greensburg. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
