Lions Fall To Edinboro; Kachurick Sets Four Diving Records

ERIE, Pa. – Freshman diver Lucas Kachurick broke three records and set another but the Penn State Behrend men's swimming and diving team fell to Division II Edinboro 149-122 in non-conference action on Saturday after in the Junker Center Pool.
Kachurcik broke the pool and team record in the 3m diving for six dives with a score of 343.5. His combined scored for 11 dives was 531.45, resetting his old record of 406.80 and becoming the first to hold the pool record in the 3-meter for 11 dives.
In the pool, Steve Torre won twice for the Lions. He swam a season-best time of 48.67 in the 100 free for first place and won the 200 IM in 2:04.99. Torre also was the top Behrend finisher in the 100 breaststroke, taking second with a time of 1:03.40.
Clay Altemose had the best time for the Lions in three events, claiming a second place and two thirds on the day. He touched in 53.95 just .20 seconds away from first in the 100 butterfly and clocked in at 2:08.63 in the 200 backstroke for third. Altemose's time of 2:03.67 in the 200 butterfly was also good for third.
Brendan Lacey took second in the 500 free (5:04.14) and Andrew Opalewski was a close second in the 50 free (22.85) for Behrend.
In the 200 breaststroke, Ben Strunk and Jake Sherk went 2-3 with times of 2:24.64 and 2:26.13, respectively.
In the final 400 free relay, the team of Lacey, Opalewski, Torre and Hunter Backenstose took first place with a time of 3:20.86.
The Fighting Scots set two pool records on the afternoon. Drew Sapp won the 1000 free with a time of 9:56.47 to break the old record of 10:00.78 set back in 2009. Zak Clifford also set a pool record in the 200 backstroke by almost five seconds, coming in at 1:56.62.
The Lions return to action at the AMCC Championships held at Grove City on February 17-19.
