Men's Swimming and Diving Wins Home Opener Over Bethany

ERIE, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend men's swimming and diving team won the first seven events to take a big lead and hold on for a 103-56 over Bethany in a non-conference meet on Saturday afternoon at the Junker Center.

The Lions swept the top three spots in four out of those seven events to win their first home meet of the season.

Clay Altemose (Apollo, PA/Apollo Ridge) was the only swimmer to record a pair of wins, starting with a relay win with Daniel Simon (Harrison City, PA/Penn Trafford), Jake Sherk (Elizabethtown, PA/Elizabethtown) and Justin Pritchard (Cranberry Township, PA/Seneca Valley). All four swam a combined time of 1:39.66 for first in the 200 medley relay.

Eric Peirce (Harmony, PA/Seneca Valley), Andrew Beck (DuBois, PA/DuBois), Brendan Miller (Aliquippa, PA/Central Valley) and Everett Sargent (Gibsonia, PA/Pine-Richland) took second in the 200 medley relay in 1:47.50.

In the 1000 freestyle, Terrance Watterson (Pittsburgh, PA/Brentwood) led the Lions with a time of 11:46.53 and Justin Seeley (North East, PA/North East) clocked in at 12:01.33 for second.

The next event Behrend captured was the 200 free, swept by Andrew Opalewski (Slippery Rock, PA/Slippery Rock) in first (1:52.06), Brian Mong (Franklin, PA/Franklin) in second (1:52.65) and Pete Blazak (Sewickley, PA/Quaker Valley) in third (1:56.47).

Dane Dombrosky (Mt. Pleasant, PA/Mt. Pleasant) led a 1-2-3 finish in the 50 free. His time was best at 22.51, while Sherk clocked in at 23.12 and Dan White (Carnegie, PA/Chartiers Valley) tallied a time of 24.20.

Altemose then captured his individual win in the 200 IM. He swam a 2:05.43 for first and Simon was second with 2:08.88. Ryan Mitcheltree (Moon Township, PA/Moon) came in third in 2:15.51.

The threesome consisting of Lucas Kachurick (McKeesport, PA/Elizabeth Forward) , Danny Ketterer (Pittsburgh, PA/North Hills) and Andrew Neder (Erie, PA/Fairview) were to top three divers on the day. Kachurick led with a score of 289.70 in the one-meter diving event. Ketterer posted a score of 234.40 and Neder was third with a 211.75 total.

Brendan Miller (Aliquippa, PA/Central Valley) took the final first-place finish for Behrend in the 100 butterfly. He had a 14 second lead over second place Austin Williams of Bethany with a time of 56.49.

The remaining events were exhibition for the Lions.

Behrend returns to action on Saturday at home against Baldwin-Wallace. Meet begins at 1 p.m.
