Westminster Upends Men's Swimming and Diving

ERIE, Pa. – The Westminster men's swimming and diving team were too much for the Penn State Behrend, handing them a 173-123 loss in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon at the Junker Center.

Lucas Kachurick won both diving events, earning an NCAA qualifying score of 305.60 on the one-meter board. He claimed first in the 3-meter diving with a total of 256.

Freshman Dan Simon was a part of two winning relays and was the top finisher in the 100 backstroke. He started the meet with Justin Pritchard, Clay Altemose and Peter Blazak to make up the first-place 200 medley relay in a time of 1:36.93. He also closed out the meet with the same three teammates to win the 400 free relay (3:18.28).

In the 1000 free, Brian Mong came in fourth place overall and first for the Lions with a season-best time of 10:23.98.

After Pritchard swam in the 200 medley relay, he took second in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.61) and second in the 200 breaststroke (2:17.04).  Blazak, another relay member, came in second in the 100 freestyle 49.35, followed by Simon in third in 49.63.

Clay Altemose led Behrend in the butterfly events. He first took third in the 200 fly with a time of 2:04.03 and then third in the 100 fly in 53.34.

Everett Sargent and Hunter Backenstose were neck-and-neck in the 50 free. Sargent placed third in 22.98 while Backenstose clocked in very shortly after in 23.17.

The Lions return to action on Saturday, January 14 against Penn State Altoona. Meet time is 2 p.m.
