Lions Dominate Day One of AMCC Championships

GROVE CITY, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend men's swimming and diving team won all six events while breaking a plethora records in the meantime to take the lead after day one of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Championships on Thursday at Grove City.

The Lions are in first place with 130 points, almost 100 points better than second place held by Pitt-Bradford with 43.

The dominance began in the preliminaries earlier in the day with Dan Simon (Harrison City, PA/Penn Trafford) breaking the team, AMCC open and meet record in the 50 free (21.16), while Javier Solivan (San Juan, Puerto Rico/UHS) did he same in the 200 IM (1:55.86).

Both would win those events in the finals and break the records once again. Simon set a new time of 21.03 and Solivan took a second off this time with 1:54.57.

Simon collected two more wins and two more records in relays. Simon joined Clay Altemose (Apollo, PA/Apollo Ridge), Justin Pritchard (Cranberry Township, PA/Seneca Valley) and Everett Sargent (Gibsonia, PA/Pine-Richland) took first in the 200 free with a time of 1:24.20. That time set a new team, AMCC meet and open record.

The 400 medley relay comprised of Simon, Pritchard, Altemose and Solivan also set three records in the process of taking first place with a winning time of 3:26.95. Simon, the lead off swimmer, broke the team, AMCC meet and open record with an NCAA "B" cut time of 50.83 in the 100 butterfly.

Andrew Neder (Erie, PA/Fairview) is the AMCC Champion in the one-meter board competition with a score of 373.85.

Brian Mong (Franklin, PA/Franklin) and Ryan Mitcheltree (Moon Township, PA/Moon) took first and second place in the 500 free, respectively. Mong had the top time of 4:50.47 and Mitcheltree was nine seconds being in 4:59.18.

Behrend returns to action tomorrow for the second day of the championships. Preliminaries begin at 10 a.m.
