Presidents Too Much For Lions

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson men's swimming and diving team defeated Penn State Behrend 169-119 in non-conference action on Saturday.

The Lions started out the meet strong, winning the 200 medley relay. Dan Simon (Harrison City, PA / Penn Trafford) was the lead off swimmer, followed by Scott Romanko (Plum, PA/Plum), Nick Roth (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin) and Ty Elder (Brentwood, Ca/Heritage). The team clocked in with a winning time of 1:41.49.

Roth was a double winner for Behrend. He touched first in the 100 butterfly in 56.53 and also posted a time of 2:05.33 in the 200 butterfly. Other individual winners include Simon in the 100 backstroke (52.22) and Nick Kost (Ashburn, VA/Stone Bridge) in the 400 IM (4:28.33).

Kost tallied a time of 2:07.35 in the 200 backstroke for second place and Simon was second in the 100 freestyle with a time of 49.84, less than a second shy of first overall.

Eric Matteson (Corry, PA/Corry) posted the team's top time in the 200 breaststroke (2:26.57) for second and Romanko was close behind in third (2:33.76). Matteson earned his second runner up in the 100 breaststroke. He finished in a time of 1:05.11.

Ryan Mitcheltree (Moon Township, PA/Moon) claimed second in the 200 butterfly (2:19.97) and third in the 1650 freestyle (18:45.29).

Competing in his first meet this season, Justin Pritchard (Cranberry Township, PA/Seneca Valley) took second in the 50 free (23.37) and fourth in the 200 breaststroke (2:34.21).

In the 200 freestyle, Elder paced Behrend with a second-place time of 1:56.05.

The Lions return to action at Pitt-Bradford on Saturday, beginning at 1 p.m.
