Simon Breaks Pool Record at Pitt-Bradford

BRADFORD, Pa. – Dan Simon (Harrison City, PA/Penn Trafford) set a new pool record while winning the 100 backstroke and leading the Penn State Behrend men's swimming and diving team past Pitt-Bradford 127-74 in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) action on Saturday.

Simon swan 51.95 to break the Panthers pool record and earn his only individual win in the 100 backstroke. Simon was also instrumental in the winning 200 medley relay and 200 free relay. He led off in both relays, helping the 200 medley relay to a time of 1:41.76 and the 200 free relay to 1:32.20.

Scott Romanko (Plum, PA/Plum), Nick Roth (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin), and Ty Elder (Brentwood, CA/Heritage) were a part of the 200 medley relay and then Elder, Nick Kost (Ashburn, VA/Stone Bridge) and Steve Torre (South Fayette, PA/South Fayette ) helped the 200 free relay to their winning time.

The Lions won three other events, starting with Roth in the 200 freestyle. His time of 1:55.53 was good enough for first and Kenton Matthaei (Madison, NJ/Madison) was second in 2:06.52.

Roth led three Behrend swimmers for top times in the 500 free. He won in 5:17.92, followed by Justin Seeley (North East, PA/North East) in second (5:36.84) and Kyle Crossen (Huntingdon Beach, CA/Edison) in third (5:55.82).

Kost then did the same thing as Roth but in the 200 IM.  The freshman won in a time of (2:08.70). Torre finished in second (2:16.47) and Lloyd Koester (Edinboro, PA/General McLane) was third (2:18.99).

In the 50 free, Danny Szurley (Pittsburgh, PA/Plum) led the team with a time of 24.76 for second and Holcy Furlong (Meadville, PA/Meadville) took third in 25.87.

In the 100 events, Romanko had the top time in the butterfly (58.72) and Elder in the freestyle (50.84). Romanko also earned third in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.17) which was led by Behrend's Eric Matteson (Corry, PA/Corry) with a time of 1:04.98 for second.

Finally, Ryan Mitcheltree (Moon Township, PA/Moon) tallied a time of 11:03.05 in the 1000 freestyle for second place.

The Lions return to action on Saturday against St. Vincent. Meet begins at 1 p.m.
