Lions in First After Day One at AMCC Championships

GROVE CITY, Pa. –The Penn State Behrend men's swimming and diving team holds a 24-point lead after day one of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Championships held at Grove City in conjunction with the James E. Longnecker Invitational.

The Lions have 80 points through six events to edge Penn State Altoona in second (64). Pitt-Bradford is in third (42) and Cabrini rounds out the AMCC opponents with 23.

Dan Simon (Harrison City, PA/Penn Trafford) had the top performance of the day. He repeated as champion in the 50 free with a time of 21.25. He also finished second overall in a field of 40 swimmers.

Nick Roth (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin) was the AMCC Champion in the 500 free. He clocked in with a winning time of 4:51.17, good enough for ninth overall.  Ryan Mitcheltree (Moon Township, PA/Moon) finished in third in the conference and 11th overall with a time of 4:54.36.

Nick Kost (Ashburn, VA/Stone Bridge) led the Lions in the 200 IM, coming in second in the AMCC with a time of 1:58.08. He also took ninth overall.

In 400 medley relay, Simon, Eric Matteson (Corry, PA/Corry), Roth and Ty Elder (Brentwood, CA/Heritage) were crowned AMCC Champions with a time of 3:34.35. Overall, the foursome finished fifth.

Simon, Steve Torre (South Fayette, PA/South Fayette ), Elder and Kenton Matthaei (Madison, NJ/Madison) brought home the silver for second place in the AMCC and sixth overall with a time of 1:28.36 in the 200 free relay.

Behrend returns to action tomorrow for day two of the AMCC Championships. Preliminaries begin at 10 a.m.
