WASHINGTON, Pa. - The Washington & Jefferson men's swimming and diving team won 10 events to earn a 161-111 victory over Penn State Behrend in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon.

The Lions captured five events on the day, getting a pair from Victor Nguyen (San Jose, CA/Evergreen Valley) and Nick Kost (Ashburn, VA/Stone Bridge). Nguyen was victorious in the 100 breaststroke in 1:04.25, edging Kevin Dunigan for the Presidents (1:04.65). He also took first in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:24.83.

Kost beat the competition in the 1650 freestyle by 18 seconds to win with a time of 18:09.96. He then won 400 IM thanks for a time of 26.71 on the first length off out of the gate for a final result of 4:26.78.

Behrend swept the 100 butterfly for the fifth first-place finish. Keith Powell (Bethel Park, PA/Bethel Park) touched first in 59.38, while Jeremy Brosius (Hatboro, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) was close behind for second in 59.72 and Omar Shazly (Cairo, Eqypt/MISR American College) in third (1:11.30).

In the 200 freestyle, Nick Roth (Pittsburgh, PA/Baldwin) was the top finisher for the Lions with a time of 1:52.58 for second place and again in the 500 free (5:09.95). Behrend grabbed more second-place finishes, including one in the 100 backstroke by Mark Patterson (North Huntingdon, PA/Norwin) in 57.41.

In addition to first in the 100 butterfly, Powell was second in the 200 butterfly (2:09.00).

Nick Snyder (Murrysville, PA/Franklin Regional) swam well for the Lions, taking second in the 50 free (23.18) and third in the 100 free (52.45).

The two relays on the day placed second, starting with the 200 medley rleay consisting of Patterson, Nguyen, Roth and Snyder. The foursome touched in 1:42.79, less than a second shy of first.

In the 400 freestyle, Patterson, Snyder, Matt Myers (Cranberry Township, PA/Seneca Valley) and Roth made up the team for second place in 3:27.14.

Behrend returns to action on Friday, January 29 at Pitt-Bradford. Meet time is 5 p.m.
