Lions Swim Past W&J

WASHINGTON, Pa.  – The Penn State Behrend men's swimming and diving team won the first 12 events, earning the top three spots in three events to defeat Washington & Jefferson 168-61 in non-conference action on Saturday.

Mark Patterson (North Huntingdon, PA/Norwin) and Noah Babik (Penn Township, PA/Penn Trafford) each won three times on the day, two individual and one relay victory. The combined forces with Steven Owens (Erie, PA/McDowell) and Quinn Fischer (Fairview, PA/Cathedral Prep) to win the 200 medley relay to start the meet in 1:43.48. The Lions had a second team earn runner up in 1:46.62.

Patterson led the backstroke events, winning the 100 (55.07) and 200 (1:58.93). Babik was the leader in the 100 and 200 breaststroke, touching in 1:03.91 and 2:22.91, respectively.

Behrend went 1-2-3 in the 1000 freestyle, 200 freestyle and 200 butterfly. Jacob Schmidt (Erie, PA/Cathedral Prep) won the 1000 free (10:27.20) and David Ewing (South Fayette, PA/South Fayette) took second in 10:36.83, while Brady Mattson (Wilmington, DE/Delaware Military Academy) took third (10:42.52).

In the 200 freestyle, Cole Dombrosky (Mount Pleasant, PA/Mount Pleasant) was the front runner in 1:53.07 and Ryan Siggins (Erie, PA/Iroquois) was a close second (1:53.14), and Branden McWilliams (Waterford, PA/Fort LeBoeuf) came in third (1:58.71).

Owens led the 200 butterfly with a winning time of 2:07.72 followed by Mattson in second (2:14.80) and Nathan Wagner (Ypsilanti, MI/Lincoln) in third (2:26.65).

Diver Matthew Kuchcinski (North East, PA/North East) beat out the W&J diver in the one-meter and three-meter boards. He started with a 210.15 on the one-meter for first place and then posted a score of 189.30 to win the three-meter event.

Fischer and Siggins each won an individual event. Fischer touched first in 22.97 in the 50 free and Alex Croll (Honolulu, HI/Roosevelt) was not far behind in 23.22 for second place.

In the 100 freestyle, Siggins had a winning time of 50.31 and Dombrosky was third in 51.63.

Joining Babik in the 100 breaststroke was Justin Spence (Houston, TX/Cy-Fair) who took second in 1:10.71. In the 200 breaststroke, Ryan Elsey (Hermitage, PA/Hickory) placed second in 2:28.28.

Picking up a pair of third-place finishes was Liam Watterson (Brentwood, PA/Baldwin). He had a time of 58.28 in the 100 back and 2:09.26 in the 200 back.

The Lions return to action on Saturday at Pitt-Bradford. Meet begins at 4 p.m.
