Men's Swimming Captures Tri-Meet at Pitt-Bradford

BRADFORD, Pa.  – The Penn State Behrend men's swimming and diving team earned a 139-61 win over Pitt-Bradford and a 171-25 decision over Wells in a non-conference tri-meet on Saturday evening.

Liam Watterson (Brentwood, PA/Baldwin) was a double-winner on the night. He led four Behrend swimmers to first place in the 200 IM with a time of 2:07.21 and also won the 200 backstroke (2:04.26).

Noah Babik (Penn Township, PA/Penn Trafford) was second behind Watterson in the 200 IM (2:09.37) and also won the 200 breaststroke in 2:18.28. He also swam on the second-place 400 medley relay with Mark Patterson (North Huntingdon, PA/Norwin), Steven Owens (Erie, PA/McDowell) and Ryan Siggins (Erie, PA/Iroquois) in 3:43.20. Pitt-Bradford won the relay by three seconds.

The Lions swept three events, beginning with the 1650 freestyle. Brady Mattson (Wilmington, DE/Delaware Military) led a 1-2-3 finish with a time of 17:30, followed by David Ewing (South Fayette, PA/South Fayette) in 17:53.39 and Patterson in third (18:13.69).

Behrend had the top three winners in the 100 and 500 freestyle. Alex Croll (Honolulu, HI/Roosevelt) led the way in the 100 free. He had a winning time of 49.76, while Siggins was second (51.25) and Branden McWilliams (Waterford, PA/Fort LeBoeuf) was third (51.35).

Jacob Schmidt (Erie, PA/Cathedral Prep) had the fastest time in the 500 free (5:01.17) with Ewing in second (5:10.88) and Cole Dombrosky (Mount Pleasant, PA/Mount Pleasant) in third.

Behrend was a close second in the 200 freestyle and 50 freestyle. Schmidt was runner up in the 200 free (1:48.79) and McWilliams was third. Even though the Lions did not win the 50 free, they placed the next four spots led by Quinn Fischer (Fairview, PA/Cathedral Prep). He touched in 22.79, followed by Davis Kraft (Houston, TX/Langham Creek) in second 23.87 and Dombrosky in third (24.00).

In the 200 butterfly, Owens won in 2:04.46.

Behrend had the top two relays in the 400 freestyle. The winning team consisted of Patterson, Croll, Fischer and Siggins. The group touched in 3:23.03.

The Lions return to action on Saturday at Penn State Altoona. Meet begins at 1 p.m.
