Men's Tennis Edges Alfred

ERIE, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend men's tennis team tallied their fourth straight win and third of the weekend thanks to a close 5-4 decision over Alfred in non-conference action on Sunday at Westwood Racquet Club.

The Lions (6-3) won two doubles matches, before splitting the singles competition including four tiebreaker matches to defeat the Saxons (0-6).

Jeremy Burnheimer (Johnstown, PA/Westmont Hilltop) and Brent McFarland (Austinburg, OH/Geneva) posted an 8-4 win over Kevin Volz and Pat Brown at No. 2 doubles. Chris Heintz (Fairview, PA/Fairview) and Brett Palmer (North East, PA/North East) followed with an 8-6 win at the No. 3 spot.

McFarland was the lone double winner on the day after capturing his doubles match, he went on to defeat Matt Baloga 6-0, 4-6 and 10-7 at No. 3 singles. Eric Cho (Seoul, South Korea/Cotter (MN)) also won in a tiebreaker set over Mike Wisniewski, 1-6, 6-4 and 10-6 at No. 2 singles.

Michael Funera (Hermitage, PA/Hickory) picked up the last singles win for Behrend. The freshman handed Sean Benoit a 6-1, 6-2 loss at No. 6 singles.

The Lions return on Monday, March 7 against Eastern Nazarene in Hilton Head, South Carolina. Match time is TBA.
