The Penn State Behrend men’s tennis team won all but one match to defeat Pitt-Greensburg 8-1 in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) action on Friday night.
ERIE, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend men's tennis team won all but one match to defeat Pitt-Greensburg 8-1 in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) action on Friday night.
The Lions (9-7, 4-1 AMCC) won three close doubles matches to start. Yanique Apgar (Pittsburgh, PA) and Mike Russell (Pittsburgh, PA/Upper St. Clair) were 8-6 winners at No. 1, while Brent McFarland (Austinburg, OH/Geneva) and Jeremy Burnheimer (Johnstown, PA/Westmont Hilltop) tallied the same score at No. 2 doubles.
Michael Funera (Hermitage PA/Hickory) and Nick Kapty (Monongahela, PA/Ringgold) put Behrend ahead 3-0 with an 8-5 decision at No. 3 doubles.
The Lions won all but the No. 4 singles match. Apgar had his No. 1 singles match retired after he took a 1-0 lead in the first set. Russell, playing at No. 2, defeated Tyler Fox 6-1, 6-2. At No. 3 singles, McFarland only gave up one set point to win 6-0, 6-1.
The fifth singles win went to Burnheimer. He posted a 6-2, 6-4 score over Luke Zeleznik and Brett Palmer (North East, PA/North East) had a three-set win against Mike Meyer 5-7, 6-4 and 10-5.
Behrend returns to action on Tuesday at Houghton. Match begins at 5 p.m.
