Men's Tennis Advances to AMCC Championship Match

ERIE, Pa. –  The Penn State Behrend men's tennis team advances to the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Championship match, defeating Mt. Aloysius 5-0 on Saturday evening at Westwood Racquet Club.

The No. 2 Lions (11-8) will face No. 1 Franciscan tomorrow morning at 11:30 a.m. for the AMCC crown.

Behrend swept the doubles matches for the early 3-0 lead and then captured just two singles matches to defeat the Mounties. Yanique Apgar (Pittsburgh, PA) and Mike Russell (Pittsburgh, PA/Upper St. Clair) posted an 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles, before Brent McFarland (Austinburg, OH/Geneva) and Jeremy Burnheimer (Johnstown, PA/Westmont Hilltop) registered an 8-1 victory at the No. 2 spot.

Mike Funera (Hermitage, PA/Hickory) and Nick Kapty (Monongahela, PA/Ringgold) collected the final doubles win at No. 3, handing Aubrey Brown and Jalen Terry an 8-5 decision.

Apgar and Russell collected the singles wins for the Lions. Apgar blanked Matt Hample, 6-0, 6-0, while Russell defeated Nick Centar 6-1, 6-0 to complete the match.

Behrend looks for its seventh AMCC title tomorrow against the Barons, a 5-0 winner over Pitt-Greensburg in the first semifinal.
