Lions Fall in AMCC Showdown
The Penn State Behrend men's tennis team fell 7-2 to Franciscan in the showdown for the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) regular-season title on Sunday afternoon.
ERIE, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend men's tennis team fell 7-2 to Franciscan in the showdown for the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) regular-season title on Sunday afternoon.
Franciscan claimed the No. 1 seed for the upcoming tournament and the Lions (10-8, 4-1 AMCC) will be the second seed. The Barons narrowly won all three doubles matches, winning two in tiebreaker games, and then four of the six singles matches.
At No. 1 doubles, Yanique Apgar (Pittsburgh, PA) and Scott Russell (Pittsburgh, PA/Upper St. Clair) dropped a 9-8 (7-3) decision, before Brenden Dollard (Pittsburgh, PA/Peters Township) and Brent McFarland (Austinburg, OH/Geneva) were close at No. 2 doubles falling 9-8 (8-6).
Apgar and Russell were victorious in singles action, getting revenge over Sulak and John Gallagher from their doubles match.
Apgar remains undefeated in AMCC action at No. 1 singles play, defeating Sulak 7-6, 6-2. Russell won in three sets 6-3, 6-7 and 11-9 at No. 2 over Gallagher.
Behrend returns to action on Wednesday at Allegheny. Match time is 5 p.m.
