Men's Tennis Advances to AMCC Championship Match

ERIE, Pa. -The Penn State Behrend men's tennis team advances to the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Championship match, defeating Penn State Altoona 5-0 on Saturday evening at Westwood Racquet Club.

The No. 2 Lions (11-9) will face No. 1 Franciscan tomorrow morning at 11:30 a.m. for the AMCC crown.

Behrend swept the doubles matches for the early 3-0 lead and then captured just two singles matches to defeat the Altoona Lions. Yanique Apgar (Pittsburgh, PA) and Scott Russell (Pittsburgh, PA/Upper St. Clair) posted an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles.

Brenden Dollard (Pittsburgh, PA/Peters Township) and Brent McFarland (Austinburg, OH/Geneva) tallied an 8-2 victory at No. 2 doubles for a 2-0 lead, before Nick Kapty (Monongahela, PA/Ringgold) and Michael Duckett (Girard, PA/Fairview) registered an 8-4 win for the big lead heading into singles play.

Apgar and Russell were the only two that needed their singles wins to count to make it a shortened match. Apgar, at No. 1, won 6-3, 6-2 against Jake Colledge and then Russell handed Jon D'arcy a 6-1, 6-0 loss at No. 2 singles to complete the match.

Behrend is looking for its first AMCC title since 2012 and seventh crown overall. The Lions will face the Barons tomorrow in the championship match.
