No. 15 New Paltz Survives Lions

HOBOKEN, NJ – The 15th-ranked SUNY New Paltz tallied 66 kills and 19 blocks as a team to defeat the Penn State Behrend men's volleyball team 3-2 on the first day of the United Volleyball Conference (UVC) Crossover Weekend hosted by Stevens.

New Paltz (8-1, 2-0 UVC) collected their second conference win with a five-set victory over the Lions (0-8, 0-2 UVC).  New Paltz won 25-16, 25-22, 26-28, 26-28 and 15-11. Mike Van Tyne led with 24 kills on 45 attempts and five blocks. Misa Garo handed out 37 assists.

The Lions erased a 2-0 deficit with back-to-back wins at 28-26, but fell in the tiebreaker set by four points. Grant Kocher (McMurray, PA/Peters Township) and Kevin Dyer (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny) each recorded 14 kills and combined for 15 digs. Kocher tallied a team-best nine and Dyer added six.

Evan Fullerton (Ambridge, PA/Ambridge) led with 28 assists, while Colin Ingram (Holliard, OH/Hilliard Darby) dished out 20 helpers. Anthony Capizzi (Pittsburgh, PA/Pittsburgh Central Catholic) posted seven kills and two blocks.

Behrend returns to action tomorrow against Bard at Stevens. Match time is 10 a.m.
