Men's Volleyball Falls In Thriller To York

JAMAICA, NY – Edner Geffard recorded a game-high 30 kills (.404) and added 10 digs to lead the York men's volleyball team over Penn State Behrend 3-2 in non-conference action on Friday night.

The Cardinals (8-8) were able to hold off the Lions (2-12) after they won the first set, 25-16. York had luck on their side and pulled off 26-24 victories in the next two sets. Behrend knotted the game at 2-all by winning the fourth set 25-22, but could not come through in the fifth set falling 15-11.

Terrence Sutton tallied 22 digs for the Cardinals, while Bryan Williams had a double-double with 13 kills and 13 digs.

For the Lions, Grant Kocher (McMurray, PA/Peters Township) had a team-best 16 kills and six blocks in the loss. Nate Steele (Cranberry Township, PA/Seneca Valley) posted 10 kills and Evan Fullerton (Ambridge, PA/Ambridge) had 27 assists.

Behrend came out in control of the first set, never trailing and only committing three errors on 11 kills to go ahead 1-0. Tory Larson (Penn Hills, PA/Homeschooled) knocked in the final two kills to seal the first-set win.

The Cardinals took a 14-9 lead in the second set, however the Lions came back to tie the game at 23-all. On match point for York, Behrend made an untimely rotation error, giving the Cardinals the set.

The third set was just as close as the second. This time, the Lions held a 14-9 lead and York battled back to even the score at 24-all. The Cardinals cashed in on a Behrend service error and then got an ace from Geffard to go up, 2-1.

The Lions controlled most of the fourth set, holding a three or four point lead for the majority of time. Behrend held off any York attempt to get back in the game to send the match into a tiebreaker set.

York jumped out to a 4-0 advantage and never trailed in the fifth set to hold on for a 15-11 victory.

The Lions return to action tomorrow at Sarah Lawrence. Match begins at 3 p.m.
