Men's Volleyball Defeats Penn State Altoona; Falls to Carthage

GREENVILLE, Pa.  – The Penn State Behrend men's volleyball team picked up their first win of the 2013 season on the first day of the Thiel Tournament on Saturday evening.

The Lions swept Penn State Altoona 3-0 in their second match of the day, winning 25-15, 25-18 and 25-17. Ty Sheehan (Cochranton, PA/Cochranton) led with 14 kills and five digs and Grant Kocher (McMurray, PA/Peters Township) added 10 kills with three blocks.

Evan Fullerton (McMurray, PA/McMurray) and Colin Ingram (Hilliard, OH/Hilliard Darby) dished out 20 and 19 assists, respectively. Newcomers Tyler Karl (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth) and Josh Oertly (Cochranton, PA/Cochranton) combined for 11 kills and nine blocks in the win. Karl had six kills, four blocks and Oertly five kills and five blocks.

Behrend faced Carthage in the opening match of the year, falling 3-0. Carthage posted a 25-14, 25-17 and 25-23 victory. Kocher and Sheehan led on both sides of the ball. Kocher tallied nine kills and four blocks. Sheehan recorded seven kills and five digs.

Fullerton contributed 21 assists and six kills. Kevin Smith (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin) had a team-best five blocks and Nate Steele (Cranberry Township, PA/Seneca Valley) posted six kils.

The Lions return to action tomorrow against Thiel and Eastern Mennonite. Matches begin at 10 a.m.
