Men's Volleyball Handles Medaille, 3-1

ERIE, Pa.  – The Penn State Behrend men's volleyball team defeated Medaille 3-1 (25-13, 25-21, 20-25, 25-23) in non-conference action in the home finale at the Junker Center on Tuesday night.

Tyler Herrmann (Cranberry Township, PA/Seneca Valley) posted 15 kills and 11 digs for the double-double while adding three blocks to help the Lions (13-10) avenge a five-set loss to the Mavericks (6-20) earlier this season.

Dillon Hildebrand (Red Lion, PA/Red Lion) was one dig shy of a double-double, recording 13 kills, nine digs and three blocks.

Behrend took the first two sets, before surrendering the third and then capturing the fourth by two points for the win. Medaille committed 11 errors in the first set and Behrend tallied nine kills, including three from Herrmann to post a commanding 25-13 decision.

The Lions trailed by as many as four in the second set. Down 15-11, Behrend went on an 8-0 spurt to take the lead for good at 19-15. A pair of kills by Colin Dedert (Pittsburgh, PA/Plum) sparked the comeback during the run. Herrmann and Jake Albert (Cranberry Township, PA/Seneca Valley) each recorded a kill down the stretch to give the Lions a two-set lead.

The Mavericks had their best hitting happen in the third set, knocking down 15 kills with five errors on 36 attempts (.278) and holding Behrend to just eight kills for a 25-20 win and cut the lead to 2-1 in the match.

The fourth set came down to the final points. A kill from Herrmann gave Behrend match point but Medaille responded with a kill from Sam Bloomberg to make it 24-23. Danny Francis (Pittsburgh, PA/Thomas Jefferson) set up Herrmann and then Hildebrand on the final kill at 25-23.

Francis led with 19 assists and seven digs. Josh Mathews (Rochester, NY/Churchville-Chili) dished out 17 helpers, four digs and two aces.

The Lions return to action on Saturday at Juniata with St. John Fisher. First match is at 11 a.m.
