ERIE, Pa. - The Penn State Behrend men's water polo team lost to crosstown rival Gannon 10-9 on Sunday afternoon.

With the score tied at 7-all early in the fourth, the Golden Knights scored three consecutive goals to earn the victory.

The Lions (1-3) were able to get on the board first midway through the opening quarter. Matthew Johnson (Houston, TX/Cypress Falls) found the back of the net to give Behrend a 1-0 lead.  After Gannon answered to tie the game, Wes Atkinson (Camarillo, CA/Rio Mesa) scored to give the Lions a 2-1 lead after one.

The closely contested battle continued in the second quarter with the Golden Knights outscoring Behrend 3-2 to tie it at 4-all at the break.  Johnson and Ali Khan (Lake Zurich, IL/Stevenson) each netted a goal for the Lions.

Gannon once again netted three goals in the third with the Lions scoring two more. Adam Glick (Bonita, CA/Bonita Vista) and Victor Nguyen (San Jose, CA/Evergreen Valley) tallied goals for Behrend.

After Johnson scored his third goal of the game, the Golden Knights offense erupted for three straight to take a 10-7 lead.  Johnson struck again in the final two minutes with Khan scoring one as well, but the Gannon defense clamped down to preserve the victory.

Johnson and Khan combined to score six of the Lions' nine goals.

Behrend will be back in action Saturday at the Navy Invitational.  The Lions will open with Connecticut College at 9 a.m.
