Lions Compete at Southern Division Championships

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Penn State Behrend men's water polo team competed at the Southern Division Championships on Saturday.  The Lions fell to Princeton 13-7 and Notre Dame College 15-5 before defeating Salem International, 16-15.

In game one, the Tigers overpowered Behrend with nine goals in the second half.

The Lions netted two first half goals and only trailed by two at the break.  The game turned in favor of Princeton in the third quarter.  The Tigers netted six unanswered goals to take command and earn the victory.

Ali Khan (Lake Zurich, IL/Stevenson) led the Behrend offense with four goals.  Kody Veit (Harleysville, PA/Souderton) chipped in two goals with Ted Dean (Ramona, CA/Ramona) contributing one.

The Lions second game of the day was against Notre Dame College.

The Falcons came out fast with nine goals in the opening quarter and never looked back.  The Behrend defense held Notre Dame to just six goals over the next three quarters but the deficit was too much to overcome.

Matthew Johnson (Houston, TX/Cypress Falls) found the back of the net twice to lead the Lions.  Jake DesRoches (Fairfax, VA/WT Woodson), Khan, and Veit each tallied one goal.

In Behrend's final game of the day, the Lions erupted for 16 goals to defeat Salem International for the second time this season.

The two teams played to a 7-all tie at the halfway mark.  In the second half, Behrend scored five in the third and four in the fourth to earn their second victory of the season.

Khan and Veit each scored six goals.  Johnson, Wes Atkinson (Camarillo, CA/Rio Mesa), Victor Nguyen (San Jose, CA/Evergreen Valley), and Justin Vink (Los Angeles, CA/Granada Hills Charter) all scored one.

Brendann Rosa (North Miami, FL/Hialeah) and Ty Elder (Brentwood, CA/Heritage) combined to make 11 saves in the win.

The Lions will be back in action tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. against Washington and Jefferson in the ninth place game.
